Music at Shiney Row Primary School

Music plays an important and valued role in life at Shiney Row Primary School. It is a powerful form of expression that supports creativity, confidence and wellbeing, while also developing essential skills such as listening, concentration, coordination and teamwork. Through music, children build cultural awareness, make connections with others and develop resilience as they practise, perform and reflect. At Shiney Row, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to enjoy, experience and succeed in music.

Music is woven throughout school life and is delivered through:

  • Weekly curriculum music lessons
  • Whole-school and class singing opportunities
  • Instrumental and practical music-making
  • Performances and celebrations within school and the wider community

We aim to provide children with rich, varied musical experiences that allow them to explore sound, develop their musical skills and discover their own musical identity. As pupils progress through school, they engage with music from a wide range of genres, cultures and time periods, helping them to become open-minded, confident and reflective young musicians.

Across all year groups, learning is built around the key strands of the National Curriculum for music:

  • Listening and Appraising
  • Musical Activities (including warm-ups, singing, playing instruments, improvisation and composition)
  • Performing

Our approach is practical, inclusive and creative. Children are encouraged to take an active role in music-making: performing together, experimenting with sounds, creating their own music and sharing their achievements with others. Through these experiences, we strive to nurture a lifelong appreciation of music and the confidence to express themselves musically.
