Modern Foreign Language

French at Shiney Row Primary School

At Shiney Row Primary School, we aim to instill a love of language learning and develop pupils’ awareness of other cultures. We want all pupils to gain the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both spoken and written language.

Through high-quality French teaching, we provide pupils with a strong foundation in language learning. This enables them to apply their skills when learning further languages, strengthens their understanding of the English language, and prepares them for future study and opportunities to live and work in an increasingly global society.

Our French curriculum is carefully designed and sequenced so that knowledge builds cumulatively over time. It is structured around three core knowledge strands that run throughout all units: Phonics, Vocabulary and Grammar. Pupils apply this knowledge through progressive skill development across Language comprehension (listening and reading) and Language production (speaking and writing). This approach ensures that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to understand and communicate ideas effectively in French by the end of Key Stage 2.

The strands

The knowledge strands of phonics, vocabulary and grammar, often referred to as the three pillars of progression.

Phonics-Our curriculum features a comprehensive phonics program that ensures the explicit teaching of critical phonemes, with a focus on pronunciation and the sound-spelling relationship.

Vocabulary-Our scheme systematically introduces the most commonly used words within familiar sentence structures and patterns. It also provides opportunities for pupils to revisit previously learned vocabulary in different contexts.

Grammar-The scheme is underpinned by a carefully structured progression of key grammatical concepts.

There are also two complementary skills strands:

Language comprehension(listening and reading). This strand develops pupils’ ability to understand spoken and written French from a range of sources.

Language production(speaking and writing) This strand supports pupils in using French to express themselves with increasing fluency and accuracy.
