PHSE & RSE at Shiney Row Primary School
Evidence shows that being educated in core life skills early on gives children the best chance of developing the resilience, confidence, and practical skills needed to navigate life both online and offline, empowering them to make positive choices that can last a lifetime.
At Shiney Row Primary School, our core values of Respect, Collaboration, Perseverance, Success and Responsibility underpin a whole-school approach to children’s health, emotional wellbeing, and achievement. While academic success is a central purpose of school, we recognise that this cannot be fully achieved unless children feel safe, cared for, resilient, and have a strong sense of belonging built through positive relationships and friendships.
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum meets the specific needs of our pupils and local community. We use the SCARF scheme as a minimum expectation and baseline, ensuring statutory coverage and progression; however, this is enhanced through our own carefully planned, contextual curriculum. This allows us to respond directly to the needs, experiences, and challenges faced by our learners within the local area.
A core component of our curriculum includes Relationships, Sex and Health Education, meeting all statutory requirements and taking a preventative, age-appropriate approach to prepare children for adolescence and adulthood. Our curriculum promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, enabling them to make informed and responsible choices as they navigate a rich, varied, and ever-evolving modern world.
Through a flexible and inclusive approach, we ensure that learning reflects the unique context of our school community, creating an environment where all pupils can thrive. We continually adapt and enhance our provision, including targeted learning around online safety and digital wellbeing, to support children in developing critical thinking skills and resilience from an early age.
We aim to promote children's knowledge and self-esteem, emphasising respect for themselves and others in local, national, and global communities. Our curriculum encourages the exploration of diverse cultural values, fostering positive attitudes, honesty, and sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others. We focus on equipping children with information and skills to manage their physical and emotional health, including the changes during puberty, in an age-appropriate way.
Ultimately, we seek to prepare pupils for adult life by helping them navigate decisions, responsibilities, and opportunities, while developing into emotionally mature individuals.
Underpinning our PSHCE curriculum, which promotes positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement is SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship, which is a supported coherent, sequential curriculum that meets the Relationships Education and Health Education statutory requirements
