Keeping Children Safe at Shiney Row Primary School
At Shiney Row Primary School, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and ensuring that every pupil feels safe, valued, respected and supported. We believe that children learn best when they feel secure, happy and confident, and we work hard to create a culture where every child knows they have trusted adults they can speak to.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. All staff receive regular safeguarding training and are expected to remain vigilant to any concerns relating to a child's safety or wellbeing. We work closely with parents/carers and external agencies to ensure that children receive the right support at the right time. Current statutory guidance continues to emphasise a whole-school safeguarding culture, child-centred practice and the shared responsibility of all adults to protect children.
We listen carefully to the views, wishes and experiences of our pupils and place children's needs at the centre of all safeguarding decisions.
Our Approach to Safeguarding
We recognise that safeguarding extends beyond protecting children from abuse and neglect. It includes:
Promoting children's physical and mental wellbeing.
Supporting good attendance and engagement in education.
Protecting children from bullying, discrimination and harassment.
Teaching pupils how to stay safe online.
Raising awareness of safeguarding risks, including exploitation, domestic abuse, radicalisation and harmful behaviours.
Supporting children and families through early help and intervention where needed.
Promoting positive relationships, respect and inclusion.
We recognise that attendance is an important safeguarding issue. Working together to ensure that pupils attend school regularly helps us to promote children's welfare, identify concerns early and provide timely support when it is needed.
We encourage all members of our school community to share concerns about a child's welfare. No concern is ever too small, and we will always take concerns seriously.
Designated Safeguarding Lead Team
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads have overall responsibility for safeguarding and child protection within the school.
They are specially trained to:
Listen to children and families.
Respond to safeguarding concerns.
Work with external agencies.
Provide advice and support to staff.
Ensure children receive the help and protection they need.

Raising a Safeguarding Concern How to Raise a Concern If you have a concern about the safety of a child or young person (aged under 18) then you should talk to someone immediately. You can contact Together for Children – Sunderland – on 0191 5205560 (available 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday – Thursday, 8.30am to 4.30pm Friday); or the Out of Hours Team on 0191 520 5552 (also available 24 hours Saturday and Sunday)
Online Safety Technology plays an important role in children's lives, and we are committed to helping pupils use technology safely, responsibly and positively. We recognise that safeguarding applies both online and offline. Through our curriculum and wider safeguarding work, we help pupils understand how to stay safe when using the internet, social media, gaming platforms and emerging technologies. Online safety continues to be a significant focus within national safeguarding guidance. We teach children how to:
We work closely with parents and carers to promote safe and positive online experiences for all children. We also encourage families to talk regularly about online activity, privacy settings, age-appropriate content and the safe use of emerging technologies.
The Prevent Duty As part of our commitment to safeguarding, we have a statutory duty to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. Through our curriculum, assemblies and wider personal development provision, we promote: Fundamental British Values. Respect and tolerance. Critical thinking skills. Safe and respectful discussion of different views. An understanding of the risks associated with extremism and radicalisation. Support for Families We understand that families may sometimes need additional support. We can signpost and refer families to a range of services offering support with: Mental health and emotional wellbeing. Family support. Attendance. Early Help. Online safety. Parenting support. Operation Encompass Shiney Row Primary School is proud to be an Operation Encompass school. Operation Encompass is a partnership between schools and the police which ensures that, when a child has experienced domestic abuse, the school is informed before the next school day. This enables us to provide timely and appropriate support to help children feel safe, understood and ready to learn.
