Year 2 ST Information

Year 2 information

PE: Year 2 children have PE on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure children wear appropriate clothing and footwear. No jewellery should be worn. Children should be able to tie their own laces if wearing trainers with laces.

Snack: Children are provided with a piece of fruit each day during their time in Year 2. This includes apples, carrots, bananas, tomatoes, satsumas, pears and raisins.

Water Bottles: Please bring in a water bottle for your child so that they are able to get a drink of fresh water throughout the day. This should be filled with water only.

Uniform: Please ensure that any uniform worn by children has a name inside. We hate to see jumpers and cardigans go missing but unfortunately these things do happen if names are not inside.

Class Charts: We use Class Charts to share information and communicate with you. Children are able to earn points within lessons for being ready to learn, remaining on task and for good effort. We also award points throughout the day to encourage and support children in being the best that they can be.

Homework: At Shiney Row Primary School, we focus on three key areas for homework. Reading: Children will all have a reading book at the appropriate level. We ask that children read at home at least 4 times per week with their reading diaries signed. This helps children to develop their fluency, learn new vocabulary and develop important skills in comprehension.

Spelling: Your child will have 10 spellings each week, ready for our test on a Friday. They have log ins for EdShed to help them.

Times Tables: In Year 2, the other part of our homework will focus on recall of the multiplication tables and corresponding facts. We aim to become fluent in the 2, 5, 3 and 10 times tables. Your child will receive a login for TT Rockstars which is an interactive tool for practicing tables. We ask that they complete 20 sessions per week. Each session is 1 minute long so this equates to 20 minutes per week. It is best if they can complete a few minutes each night if possible. They are free to complete more than 20 sessions if they are enjoying it and would like to do so.

Reading

Children will be taught and consolidate a range of reading skills in year 2 to ensure they are fluent and comprehensive readers. Children will access phonics at the start of the year, and then move on to reading skills lessons. During our reading lessons, we will be continuing to practise our reading fluency and ability to confidently read aloud. They will use reading skills to figure out the meaning of unknown words to be able to discuss the meaning behind what we have read. Children will use their inference skills to look deeper into understanding a text and articulating answers appropriately. Children will regularly have the opportunity to apply these reading skills to texts and show their progress throughout the year.

Writing

Writing lessons will give children the chance to develop their understanding of the way we use sentences accurately in our work as they become grammar experts. Children will be taught how to effectively write for purpose and discuss how to improve what they have written. In our writing lessons, we will use some of the most amazing books to inspire our own work. Here are some of the books we will be using:

·         George’s Marvellous Medicine

·         Gorilla

·         The Hodgeheg

·         I was a rat!

Maths

In our maths lessons, we will have an initial focus on developing a good understanding of place value, the four number operations and fractions. Each morning, children will complete a daily ‘morning maths sheet’ which prioritises key arithmetic skills that the children will use across the mathematics curriculum. As well as ensuring they have a fundamental knowledge of the basics, we will also have a focus on problem solving and reasoning to allow the children to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the key domains including, shape, measures, statistics, position and direction.
