Class 2 Classroom Activities

Year 5 have been ‘building bridges’.

Within design and technology lessons, classes 2 and 3 have been building bridge structures. To prepare for this, we looked at different types of bridges, considering the individual strengths and build complexities of each type. Having planned our own designs, we worked in groups and began building our bridges, using a variety of materials. This was a challenging task, and when finished, we placed weight on our bridges to see which groups could hold the most weight. Additional marks were also given for bridges that had more interesting and complex designs. This was a really interesting task and we really enjoyed it. It’s just a shame that the River Wear’s, Northern Spire Bridge, was built before we could send our designs to Sunderland Council!

Swimming like fish!

Year 5 have been enjoying swimming lessons each week at Washington Leisure Centre. The children are thoroughly enjoying the lessons and all of the children are making fantastic progress. When we started in September, most were in the small pool, but as each week passes, the number of children being moved up to the big pool continues to grow. Many have now achieved the Key stage 2 expected standard of 25m and are now working on refining their technique swimming front-crawl, breaststroke, backstroke and even butterfly. Wow!
